Oven to Air Fryer Converter
The basic rule: reduce your oven temperature by 25 degrees F and cut the cook time by 20-25%. Air fryers circulate hot air in a compact space, so heat reaches every surface faster than in a full-size oven. This calculator does the math and adjusts for different food types.

Common Oven to Air Fryer Conversions
Quick reference for standard oven temperatures. Times shown assume a 30-minute oven recipe at each temperature - scale proportionally for your actual cook time.

When the 25 Degree Rule Breaks Down
Baked goods (cakes, muffins, bread)
Reduce temperature by 30-50 degrees F instead of 25. The rapid air circulation browns the exterior fast, so you need a lower temp to let the inside cook through. A cake recipe at 350 degrees F in the oven might need 300-310 degrees F in the air fryer. Check with a toothpick several minutes before the adjusted time is up.
Frozen foods (nuggets, fries, pizza rolls)
Frozen items actually convert well, but they need less time reduction - closer to 15-20% rather than 25%. The food has to thaw before it can brown, which eats into the time savings. Most frozen food bags now include air fryer instructions, so check the package first.
Wet batters and liquids
Wet batters (beer batter, tempura, pancake batter on fish) will not work. The batter drips through the basket grate before it sets. For a crispy coating in the air fryer, use dry breadcrumbs, panko, or a flour-egg-breadcrumb dredge instead.
Large roasts and whole birds
A whole chicken or turkey breast that nearly fills the basket will cook unevenly because air cannot circulate properly. If the food takes up more than two-thirds of the basket, the 25 degree rule still applies for temperature, but cook time may not decrease as much. Flip or rotate halfway through.
Tips for Converting Oven Recipes
Check food 3-5 minutes early. Every air fryer heats differently. The first time you convert a recipe, start checking doneness a few minutes before the calculated time. You can always add more time, but you cannot undo overcooking.
Do not overcrowd the basket. Air fryers work by circulating hot air around the food. If pieces overlap or are packed tightly, the air cannot reach all surfaces and you will get soggy spots. Cook in batches if needed - even with the extra batch, total time is usually less than oven cooking.
Use foil or parchment to prevent over-browning. If the top of your food is browning too fast, tent a small piece of foil over it. Air fryer parchment liners (with pre-cut holes) also help with cleanup and prevent delicate foods from sticking.
Shake or flip halfway through. Unlike an oven where heat comes from all sides, most air fryers heat primarily from the top. Flipping proteins or shaking vegetables at the halfway mark ensures even cooking and browning on all sides.
Use a meat thermometer for proteins. Converted cook times are estimates. Internal temperature is the only reliable way to know meat is done. Chicken should reach 165 degrees F, pork and beef steaks 145 degrees F.
Lightly oil food, not the basket. A thin spray of oil on the food itself gives better browning than oiling the basket. Too much oil in the basket can smoke at high temperatures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 25 degree rule always work for air fryer conversion?
It works well for most savory dishes - meats, vegetables, and frozen foods. Baked goods are the main exception. Cakes, muffins, and breads often need a 30-50 degree reduction because the intense circulating heat can brown the outside before the inside cooks through. Start with a 30 degree reduction for baking and adjust from there.
What foods should I not cook in an air fryer?
Wet batters (like beer-battered fish or tempura) will drip through the basket before they set. Very large roasts that fill the entire basket will not cook evenly because air cannot circulate. Leafy greens and lightweight foods will blow around. Cheese-topped dishes can work, but the cheese may blow off in some models.
Why do air fryers cook faster than ovens?
Air fryers use a powerful fan to circulate hot air rapidly in a small, enclosed space. A regular oven heats a much larger cavity and relies on slower natural convection. The compact size and forced airflow in an air fryer means heat reaches every surface of the food more efficiently, cutting cook times by roughly 20-25%.
Can I convert slow cooker or crockpot recipes to an air fryer?
Not directly. Slow cookers use low, moist heat over many hours to break down tough cuts. Air fryers use dry, high heat. You can air fry ingredients that would go into a slow cooker (like chicken thighs), but braised dishes, stews, and anything that needs liquid to cook will not work in an air fryer.
Do I need to preheat my air fryer like an oven?
Most air fryers reach temperature in 2-3 minutes, so preheating is quick. For best results, run the air fryer at cooking temperature for 2-3 minutes before adding food. Some smaller models heat so fast that preheating is optional, but it helps with even browning.
